JPG Compression and File Size

JPG file format is useful for when you want to get a file delivered. It is not useful when you are still working on an image because when it converts to JPG the file quality goes down to make the file size smaller so it will be easier to load. When you are converting to JPG you have the option for quality, either you want the highest quality or you want the worst quality. In these images I chose the qualities to 100%, 60%, and 0%.  0% percent quality JPG is only useful if you are sending the image to a person who still haves the old dinosaur computers.

Compositing

This image was made with the combination of many selection tools. I used a combination of the magic wand tool and the magnetic tool for the edges. I also uses the lasso tool to get rid of small dots which were left behind by the magic wand tool. I also made the images smaller or larger and then rotated them to make them fit the way I wanted them. I made sure I constrained the proportion when I was changing the scale so the images would not get stretched or squished.

Selection Tools

Tools

Rectangular Selection

The rectangular selection tools only selects pieces in rectangular shape. If for some reason you wanted to select in a circular form, you will not be able to do it with this tool.

Elliptical Selection

The elliptical selection tool does selection in the shape of circles. So if you wanted to do a straight selection like a line, you wont be able to do it with this tool.

Lasso Selection Tool

The lasso selection tool is most useful for when you want to do a free selection. The only problem with this tool is that we have human hands and it is very easy for us to make mistakes.

Polygon Lasso Tool

The polygon Lasso tool is used for free selection but it is more straight than the normal lasso tool as this tool only selects in straight lines.

Magnetic Lasso Tool

The magnetic lasso is used by setting an anchor in one point and then the tool finds the pixel boundaries and sets multiple anchors so it know the edges of an image.

Magic Wand Tool

The magic wand tool uses color to see what selection is going to make. It selects from similar colors, if there is a big part with similar color it will select all of that part.

Semiotics Logo

Discussion

The Apple Logo

The Logo for the Apple corporation is a pretty plain logo as it usually only has 2 colors. The logo is usually a black apple with the background grey or grey apple with the background white. The apple logo is recognizable because it has a bite out of the right side of the apple. The Apple corporation is mostly know for the Mac computers and the iPhones.

Origin of the symbol

There was many symbols before this one and the I think they will eventually change this one. There is a different color symbol for Apple which is a more chromatic type of symbol but this one is the one that is most seen today.
This symbol was redesigned in 1999 and it is still used today.

Meaning

The meaning behind the apple logo is just that Steve Jobs one of the founder for Apple used to work in a farm in Oregon and that is where he got the idea. The bite in the apple was just so people did not confuse is with a cherry.

Semiotic

I think that this symbol fits in two categories of semiotics, I think that it fits in Iconic and Symbolic.
The reason that I think that it is Iconic because the icon is a literal apple and you would easily identify it, but the reason it could be symbolic is because when you go to the Apple store you don't go to buy apples from the tree.

Semiotics

The meaning of Semiotics

Semiotics can be define in the simplest of ways as the science of signs.  There are three categories to semiotics, one is Iconic, Indexical, and the other is Symbolic.

Defining the 3 categories

Iconic:

The iconic category in Semiotics is something that looks like what it represents. It can mean like the symbol for death because the symbol of death is a skull and bones and that is what happens when you are dead after a while.

Indexical:

The Indexical category in Semiotics is the causal effect, also explained as something that is caused by something else. An example would be the symbol for smoke because smoke is that is caused by fire, and also another example for fire would be the ashes as that is what is left after the fire is out.

Symbolic:

The Symbolic category in Semiotics is a symbol that has to be learned and that it does not really look like what is representing. An example for symbolic would be the radiation sign or the bio hazard sign, radiation or a bio hazard does not really look like anything in specific but we have learned those signs and we know that they mean danger.

This is the symbol that is the front door of the mens restroom and I think it fits in the category of symbolic Semiotics. I think that it is symbolic because that room is not where you go to find a bunch of men just standing there. We have to learn that the symbol for the male signifies that it is the mens restroom because you can't put a symbol of a men literally using a restroom.

Color Mode Exercise

Color Mode Exercise

 Selfie

RGB:

The RGB image had 16.7 million colors and the file size is very big because of the amount of color that the image has in it. This is the biggest one out of all of them because of all the colors and it is the original.

Index color:

The index color image has 10 colors because it is the color that I chose. The file size is one third of the original RGB image because it has less colors and that makes it smaller.

Greysale:

The greyscale image has 256 colors or shades of grey. The file size is one third of the original RGB image but it is the same as the index color image. It is way smaller that the RGB image because it does not have the same amount of colors.

Bitmap:

The bitmap image had only 2 colors it was only either black or it was white. The file size was way smaller than all of the other ones, even the greyscale and the index color images, and the reason for that is that there are only 2 colors in the file.

Prep Quiz

Can you change FILE FORMAT just by changing its name?

No, you can't change the file format like that because you will confuse the computer.

How many colors are in the following COLOR MODES?

RGB: 16.7 milion

INDEXED COLOR: 256 or less

Greyscale:256

BITMAP:2

What happens to the (uncopressed) FILE SIZE as you change the COLOR MODES?

The file size changes by the amount of colors you have in the image. If you put less colors the file size is going to be smaller.

What happens to the visual quality of images as you REDUCE the number of colors by changing the color mode?

As you reduce the number of colors you also reduce the file size of the image and so you reduce the quality.

What is a good reason to convert PSD files to JPG?

You change a file to JPG when you complete the image and it is ready to go online.

Crayon Rubbings

Crayon Rubbings

Goals of the assignment

I think the goal of the assignment was to see how the different colors and the way you overlapped the different text and symbols reacted to each other. Another thing is to know when your images are overlapping and how they change with the different images you put in the project.

New skills learned

Some of the things that I learned during the crayon rubbing project is how scanning is suppose to be done and that scanning and almost everything that we use or see today uses RGB colors. I also learned the 3 things that affect the file or image that you also have to look out for. Also the 3 things to be aware when saving a file.

My crayon rubbings critic

This first crayon rubbing piece is composed of really bright but similar colors. The texture that cover the page is really patchy and green. The text I chose was of the AWC Gallery which I chose to rub it with the color yellow which is also very bright which I liked. and the final image is of the wheelchair symbol which is located in the restrooms. I enjoy very bright colors and that is why I chose those types of colors. The patchy texture that I put as the background is the side of a trash can which was made up of glued rock to the side of the bin. The AWC Gallery text was the sign that was of the front door of that room and that room really intrigued me to go inside and that is why I chose it. The last image was the wheelchair symbol for the mens restroom and I chose it because accessibility is really important to me.

The second crayon rubbing pieced I made I used some really bright and a sort of dark color. I just now notice that the colors which I used are RGB which is the things that we are learning in class at the moment of writing this blog, so I think that was just crazy. Well the green was a more darker green but it is still green. The texture that I chose was the table of a bench which was made up of wood and it was old and cracked so it made me interested in seeing how it was going to transfer to the paper. The text that I chose was the number 115 and I chose it because it brings me memories of a video game I always play which depicts that number as a big part of the storyline. The third image I chose was the symbol for the males restroom and I chose it simply because I'm a male.
