My Type Assignment

Combining type with symbol to create an illustration
In this image I took the word life and used an image to be of a similar shape  to the letter I which an image of a rose. I set the image of the rose to bitmap color mode to be only to colors; black and white. I replace the I with the rose and you can still clearly see that the word says life.

Combine a letter and overlapping symbol to create an illustration
I used the letter D for this image and I used the symbol for a stop sign to make the space in the center for the letter D. I used the image for the stop sign in Bitmap color mode.

Combine type and photo

For this type figure I used a word and an image that meant the same thing. I used the word and the image for clock. I replace the letter O with the image of the clock, and the image for the the clock is in RGB color mode.

Use a photo as a verb to replace a word

For this type figure I used an image to be a verb in a phrase.  I used the image of a lock to serve as an illustration for locked and after that I used the word "door" so the whole phrase says" locked door"

Combine 2 photos to communicate a phrase
For this figure I used the image of a goldfish and the image of a bowl to write the word fish bowl.

Incorporate an image related to and interacting with the text

For this image I used the word ladder and the image for a latter. The text is interacting with the image because the letter r is climbing up the ladder to get to the word.

Using only type to illustrate a word or concept

In this image I used the word falling and a made the text illustrate the word by making the final letters for the the word to be literally falling from the word.

Type Figures using Adobe InDesign

 Type figure 1

So this type figure is supposed to be the top of a soda can and I used only letter to make the image. I tried my hardest to make it look the same but it still looked kind of weird.

Type figure 2

This figure is supposed to be the type doing literally what the phrase says. The text is being flushed down the toilet.

Type figure 3

For this type figure I tried to make a grenade with the pen tool but it did not come out so well. The text surrounding the image is saying "This grenade is about to blow!"

Type figure 4

For this figure I made the emoji be in a very literal way. I put in an emoji for a smile so the sentence reads "That moment made me smile."

Type figure 5

In this figure I spelled out the word twirl and I tried to twirl the letters to make the image explain the word.

Low Quality Raster LOGO Reconstruction in Vector Format

Preparation

When scanning I scan the image at 600 ppi because  that is what we were told to do it in but if we did not remember the best thing to choose would be the highest. I did a selective scan so I did not have all of the other junk in the image that was only going to make a bigger file size. I used greyscale as the color mode because the image is just in black and white.

Clean Up in Photoshop

To clean up the image in Photoshop I move the levels of black and white in the image so that the blacks would go darker and the whites whiter. This means that the grey squares would go white and disappear and make the image look cleaner.

Live Trace in Illustrator

Live trace could be a viable solution depending on how messed up the image is. If the image is not that messed up it could be a solution but if the image is very messed up you may need to reconstruct it. I created the best that I could by using 3 color trace so that all the mess that was grey would disappear.

Logo Reconstruction Using the PEN Tool in Illustrator

Using the pen tool I recreated the image by using curves to try to make it as equal as possible to the original but only better. To create the oval I used only 2 anchor points which was a struggle at first but then I got it. The way to do it was to create an anchor point at the top of the oval and then click and drag so that you can make a curve and then make another one at the bottom so that you can complete the oval. For the reconstruction of the bat you needed to do the same but in some parts you needed to move the anchor handles to that the curve would go the way you wanted it to. I used yellow fill for the oval with black stoke and I used black fill on the bat.

File Formats

When I scanned I set the image to a TIFF file and then when I used it in Photoshop to clean it up I changed it to .PSD. When I move the PSD to Illustrator and finished doing the trace or the reconstruction I set them to .ai.

Advice on Vector Creation

My advice would be to practice as much as you can so that you can do the things correctly.

High Quality RGB Converted to Vector

A better way to get a higher quality vector image is to convert the raster image to RGB first and then raise the resolution so that way it has move colors to work with. The image that was in indexed color had very jagged edges as compare to the RGB vector which has smoother edges.

Raster RGB and INDEXED Increased Resolution Quality Comparison

In this assignment I used to images in different color modes. I used one in indexed color mode and the other one in RGB color mode. I raised the resolution on both of them and the results varied. The index color image when I raised the resolution the image did not have good quality as the edges were very jagged. In the RGB image the edges were a lot smoother as the image had more colors to work with as compared to only the 256 colors in Indexed color mode.

Vector File Size Comparison

COMPLEX
For this assignment I made 3 vectorized images, I made a simple image which used image trace of 3 colors, a complex image which used the image trace of High Fidelity, and just a simple curved line. The 2 first images were made from a raster selfie which I played around with the color and contrast.  The simple vector image has very little points compared to the complex images which the screen is filled with points. The line only only has 2 points in the image. File sizes are as follows: Complex with the largest file size, Line strangely with the second file size, and the smallest is the simple image.

SIMPLE

LINE

GIF Colors and Quality

GIF file format is in the indexed color mode and this means that instead of having the full 16.7 million colors of RGB it only has 256 color which also means a smaller file size. The first image is in 6 colors and the file size is 277 KB compare to the second image which is in 200 colors and the file size is 737 KB.

JPG Compression and File Size

JPG file format is useful for when you want to get a file delivered. It is not useful when you are still working on an image because when it converts to JPG the file quality goes down to make the file size smaller so it will be easier to load. When you are converting to JPG you have the option for quality, either you want the highest quality or you want the worst quality. In these images I chose the qualities to 100%, 60%, and 0%.  0% percent quality JPG is only useful if you are sending the image to a person who still haves the old dinosaur computers.

Compositing

This image was made with the combination of many selection tools. I used a combination of the magic wand tool and the magnetic tool for the edges. I also uses the lasso tool to get rid of small dots which were left behind by the magic wand tool. I also made the images smaller or larger and then rotated them to make them fit the way I wanted them. I made sure I constrained the proportion when I was changing the scale so the images would not get stretched or squished.

Selection Tools

Tools

Rectangular Selection

The rectangular selection tools only selects pieces in rectangular shape. If for some reason you wanted to select in a circular form, you will not be able to do it with this tool.

Elliptical Selection

The elliptical selection tool does selection in the shape of circles. So if you wanted to do a straight selection like a line, you wont be able to do it with this tool.

Lasso Selection Tool

The lasso selection tool is most useful for when you want to do a free selection. The only problem with this tool is that we have human hands and it is very easy for us to make mistakes.

Polygon Lasso Tool

The polygon Lasso tool is used for free selection but it is more straight than the normal lasso tool as this tool only selects in straight lines.

Magnetic Lasso Tool

The magnetic lasso is used by setting an anchor in one point and then the tool finds the pixel boundaries and sets multiple anchors so it know the edges of an image.

Magic Wand Tool

The magic wand tool uses color to see what selection is going to make. It selects from similar colors, if there is a big part with similar color it will select all of that part.

Semiotics Logo

Discussion

The Apple Logo

The Logo for the Apple corporation is a pretty plain logo as it usually only has 2 colors. The logo is usually a black apple with the background grey or grey apple with the background white. The apple logo is recognizable because it has a bite out of the right side of the apple. The Apple corporation is mostly know for the Mac computers and the iPhones.

Origin of the symbol

There was many symbols before this one and the I think they will eventually change this one. There is a different color symbol for Apple which is a more chromatic type of symbol but this one is the one that is most seen today.
This symbol was redesigned in 1999 and it is still used today.

Meaning

The meaning behind the apple logo is just that Steve Jobs one of the founder for Apple used to work in a farm in Oregon and that is where he got the idea. The bite in the apple was just so people did not confuse is with a cherry.

Semiotic

I think that this symbol fits in two categories of semiotics, I think that it fits in Iconic and Symbolic.
The reason that I think that it is Iconic because the icon is a literal apple and you would easily identify it, but the reason it could be symbolic is because when you go to the Apple store you don't go to buy apples from the tree.

Semiotics

The meaning of Semiotics

Semiotics can be define in the simplest of ways as the science of signs.  There are three categories to semiotics, one is Iconic, Indexical, and the other is Symbolic.

Defining the 3 categories

Iconic:

The iconic category in Semiotics is something that looks like what it represents. It can mean like the symbol for death because the symbol of death is a skull and bones and that is what happens when you are dead after a while.

Indexical:

The Indexical category in Semiotics is the causal effect, also explained as something that is caused by something else. An example would be the symbol for smoke because smoke is that is caused by fire, and also another example for fire would be the ashes as that is what is left after the fire is out.

Symbolic:

The Symbolic category in Semiotics is a symbol that has to be learned and that it does not really look like what is representing. An example for symbolic would be the radiation sign or the bio hazard sign, radiation or a bio hazard does not really look like anything in specific but we have learned those signs and we know that they mean danger.

This is the symbol that is the front door of the mens restroom and I think it fits in the category of symbolic Semiotics. I think that it is symbolic because that room is not where you go to find a bunch of men just standing there. We have to learn that the symbol for the male signifies that it is the mens restroom because you can't put a symbol of a men literally using a restroom.

Color Mode Exercise

Color Mode Exercise

 Selfie

RGB:

The RGB image had 16.7 million colors and the file size is very big because of the amount of color that the image has in it. This is the biggest one out of all of them because of all the colors and it is the original.

Index color:

The index color image has 10 colors because it is the color that I chose. The file size is one third of the original RGB image because it has less colors and that makes it smaller.

Greysale:

The greyscale image has 256 colors or shades of grey. The file size is one third of the original RGB image but it is the same as the index color image. It is way smaller that the RGB image because it does not have the same amount of colors.

Bitmap:

The bitmap image had only 2 colors it was only either black or it was white. The file size was way smaller than all of the other ones, even the greyscale and the index color images, and the reason for that is that there are only 2 colors in the file.

Prep Quiz

Can you change FILE FORMAT just by changing its name?

No, you can't change the file format like that because you will confuse the computer.

How many colors are in the following COLOR MODES?

RGB: 16.7 milion

INDEXED COLOR: 256 or less

Greyscale:256

BITMAP:2

What happens to the (uncopressed) FILE SIZE as you change the COLOR MODES?

The file size changes by the amount of colors you have in the image. If you put less colors the file size is going to be smaller.

What happens to the visual quality of images as you REDUCE the number of colors by changing the color mode?

As you reduce the number of colors you also reduce the file size of the image and so you reduce the quality.

What is a good reason to convert PSD files to JPG?

You change a file to JPG when you complete the image and it is ready to go online.

Crayon Rubbings

Crayon Rubbings

Goals of the assignment

I think the goal of the assignment was to see how the different colors and the way you overlapped the different text and symbols reacted to each other. Another thing is to know when your images are overlapping and how they change with the different images you put in the project.

New skills learned

Some of the things that I learned during the crayon rubbing project is how scanning is suppose to be done and that scanning and almost everything that we use or see today uses RGB colors. I also learned the 3 things that affect the file or image that you also have to look out for. Also the 3 things to be aware when saving a file.

My crayon rubbings critic

This first crayon rubbing piece is composed of really bright but similar colors. The texture that cover the page is really patchy and green. The text I chose was of the AWC Gallery which I chose to rub it with the color yellow which is also very bright which I liked. and the final image is of the wheelchair symbol which is located in the restrooms. I enjoy very bright colors and that is why I chose those types of colors. The patchy texture that I put as the background is the side of a trash can which was made up of glued rock to the side of the bin. The AWC Gallery text was the sign that was of the front door of that room and that room really intrigued me to go inside and that is why I chose it. The last image was the wheelchair symbol for the mens restroom and I chose it because accessibility is really important to me.

The second crayon rubbing pieced I made I used some really bright and a sort of dark color. I just now notice that the colors which I used are RGB which is the things that we are learning in class at the moment of writing this blog, so I think that was just crazy. Well the green was a more darker green but it is still green. The texture that I chose was the table of a bench which was made up of wood and it was old and cracked so it made me interested in seeing how it was going to transfer to the paper. The text that I chose was the number 115 and I chose it because it brings me memories of a video game I always play which depicts that number as a big part of the storyline. The third image I chose was the symbol for the males restroom and I chose it simply because I'm a male.

Arturo_gra101

Introduction

About me

Hi my name is Arturo Partida I am currently a Computer Graphics major and I plan to keep it that way. I was born in Yuma, AZ but I have live my whole life in San Luis AZ. My family is from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora but my mom move to San Luis AZ when my older brother was born and she has been living there ever since therefore so have I. Picking a Computer Graphics major was very influenced by my love for movies and video games.

Future plans

My future plans for continuing an education is maybe going to the Art Institute of Phoenix it is something I am very interested in but the only thing that is putting me down is that it is so expensive. I would have gone to that Art Institute about a year ago but the price scared me but now I am very encouraged in going there.

Experience

I have minor experience with any kind of graphics class. I took Graphic Communication 1 in my first semester but I failed it because it was an online class and I hate online classes, why learn from text when you can learn from someone with experience and that can help you if you are having problems.

Where I see myself in 10 years

I see myself in 10 years being able to support myself and if I have a family them too. I see myself doing something that I love to do and having a career doing that. I see myself having at least a nice house and the necessary thing to survive.

Favorite vacation

My favorite location for a vacation would be Spain or Greece where the scenery is just beautiful and you can visit the whole country and meet new people.
